Annapolis, MD (October 24, 2022) — County Executive Steuart Pittman and the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities will hold an Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the South County Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. The center is located at 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater, MD.
Originally built in 1991, the center closed its doors on January 3, 2022 to begin an expansion and renovation project to improve the facility. The renovation added over 2,000 square feet of much-needed space allowing for three additional rooms for activities and programs, a new fitness room, classrooms, and a reception area.
All members of the public are welcome to visit from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to take a tour of the center and enjoy light refreshments while learning about programs and services that will be available at the center. The Open House is an opportunity to meet the staff and explore the opportunities available to members, their families, and the public offered by the Department of Aging and Disabilities. Membership is available free of charge at any of the 8 senior activity centers and sites are open to adults aged 55 and older.
"We are excited to unveil the newly renovated center and we look forward to officially opening the center’s door to our older adults and offering a variety of new programming such as health, wellness and nutrition, and life enrichment," said Karrisa Kelly, Director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.
The Department of Aging and Disabilities received funding for the renovation and expansion through a stand-alone Capital Improvement Project (CIP) investment totaling $2,475,000. The last CIP funding for a Department of Aging and Disabilities facility was for the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center. In 2023, we look forward to beginning our next renovation and expansion project at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. The construction contractor, Northpoint Builders, the construction management company, KCI Technologies, Inc., and the engineering firm, Gannett Fleming, Inc., worked to complete the project under the supervision of the Department of Public Works.
The South County Senior Activity Center will reopen for services in November 2022. Services and activities will continue at the alternative location until that time. The center was closed during construction but has been operating on a normal schedule at a temporary location since January 10, 2022. Center members were hosted at 3158 Braverton Street, Edgewater where they enjoyed meals, classes, and other daily activities that were provided at the original center. The Department of Aging and Disabilities is grateful to the Anne Arundel County Public Library System and Anne Arundel County’s Southern District Police for opening up their doors to hold some of the center’s regularly scheduled classes and activities.
