Annapolis, MD (November 19, 2024) – Anne Arundel County announced its participation in a national cohort of communities working to achieve the Certified Welcoming designation from Welcoming America . This announcement was made during a press conference today, where County Executive Steuart Pittman, along with key county leaders and nonprofit partners, reaffirmed the county's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all residents. The Certified Welcoming designation will position Anne Arundel as a leader in immigrant inclusion, joining more than two dozen communities across the US and becoming only the third local government in Maryland to achieve this distinction.
“Anne Arundel County is committed to being a place where everyone, regardless of their background or immigration status, feels safe, valued, and supported,” said County Executive Pittman. “While national conversations on immigration may heighten uncertainty and fear, our focus remains on building a community rooted in equity, inclusion, and opportunity for all.”
Certified Welcoming is a formal designation from Welcoming America for cities, counties, and communities that have implemented policies and programs to create more inclusive, welcoming environments for all. Since launching in 2017, Certified Welcoming and its operating framework, the Welcoming Standard, have offered a clear roadmap for local governments seeking to build vibrant and inclusive communities.
“This is a monumental step in our ongoing efforts to support immigrant communities,” said Alison Flores, Director of the Office of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources. “With Certified Welcoming, we're not just providing services; we're building a framework where every resident can thrive. “It's about breaking down barriers and creating real opportunities.”
The Certified Welcoming program, a 10-month initiative led by Welcoming America, provides technical assistance and peer-learning opportunities to local governments. Over the next 10 months, Anne Arundel County will work closely with Welcoming America, county agencies, and nonprofit partners to evaluate current practices and implement new strategies to enhance inclusivity.
“Equity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do in Anne Arundel County,” said Asha Smith, Director of the Office of Equity and Human Rights. “This designation will ensure we continue to lead by example, fostering a community where everyone, regardless of where they come from, has the tools and support they need to succeed.”
