County Executive Pittman Announces Hiring of Animal Care & Control Administrator

Claudia Roll brings nearly thirty years of experience in animal welfare, education, operations, budgeting, and management.

Annapolis, MD (July 26, 2024) - County Executive Steuart Pittman announced the hiring of Claudia Roll as the County’s Animal Care & Control Administrator. Roll will start in the position on Monday, July 29.

“Claudia Roll has the experience and the skills to support the essential work of the staff and volunteers at Animal Care and Control, and to lead a county process to transform our agency into a restructured, mission-driven quasi-government nonprofit that puts the welfare of animals at the top of its agenda,” said County Executive Pittman.

Roll most recently served as Chief of Staff for the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C., where she supervised a staff of more than 80 employees. In her work at the Alliance, she oversaw a variety of shelter functions, including animal care, behavior, animal control, humane law enforcement, and volunteers. She led the operations team through the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining essential services while increasing foster placement by over 70% and implementing a virtual adoption process.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Animal Care & Control team,” Roll said. “I’m especially excited for the opportunity to bring my experience to serve the citizens and animals of the county I call home.”

Prior to her work in Washington, Roll worked as a kennel supervisor and as a program manager for the City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department. In those roles, she oversaw spaying and neutering, fostering, and volunteer programs. The department operates two municipal shelters with an annual intake of 24,000 animals.

Roll previously served as Manager for Companion Animal and Sheltering Issues for Animal Protection of New Mexico, a statewide nonprofit organization where she evaluated animal care and control operations for New Mexico agencies and recommended improvements.

Roll holds certifications in training and in animal cruelty investigations and is a resident of Severna Park.
