The Office of Equity and Human Rights and the Department of Aging and Disabilities will host a lunch-and-learn webinar for County Departments and our partners on "Best Practices for Equal Access: Foreign and Sign Language Services." Languageline Solutions will provide technical assistance, best practices, and resources for using interpreters and translators in varying circumstances.

The topics that will be covered during the workshop include:

  • An overview of technology and the various platforms on which translation services can be requested and provided, such as video, phone, app, mobile, closed captioning, etc.
  • Requesting a specialized interpreter/translator with expertise in specialized vocabulary and phrases for medical, legal, and more.
  • Live interpretation for virtual and in-person events in foreign languages and American Sign Language ASL. This includes options for off-site and community-based workers.
  • The importance of cultural nuance: translating text to capture and convey cultural idioms, phraseology, and contextual meaning.
  • Proofreading: Review of existing translated materials.
