Anne Arundel County Council to Hold Special Meeting to Vote on a Process for Filling a Vacancy on the Board of Education

Annapolis, Md (July 26, 2021) The Anne Arundel County Council will hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 6 pm to vote on the process for filling the Board of Education vacancy for District One. The meeting will be conducted virtually using Zoom.

In 2017, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law that required the Anne Arundel County Board of Education to include, among other things, 7 elected members, one for each Councilmanic district in the County. See 2017 Maryland Laws Ch. 473 (H.B. 716).

Members representing Districts One, Four, Five, and Seven were elected to the County Board of Education during the general election held on November 6, 2018, for six-year terms that began on December 3, 2018. Members representing Districts Two, Three, and Six were elected during the general election held on November 3, 2020, for four-year terms that began on December 7, 2020. A member from each district will be elected at the general election in 2024 for four-year terms that will begin on December 2, 2024.

Candace C.W. Antwine was the elected Board member from District One. Sadly, Ms. Antwine passed away on July 16, 2021 and the District One seat is now vacant. Under State law, the County Council “shall select a qualified individual to fill any vacancy in the office of an elected member of the county board for the remainder of the term and until a successor is elected and qualifies”. Md. Code Ann., Educ. § 3-2A-04. With the passing of Ms. Antwine, the County Council must now fill that vacancy.
