Annapolis, MD -- On March 21, 2019, the Office of the State's Attorney, in partnership with Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control and Anne Arundel County Police Department, will be co-hosting a training for law enforcement regarding investigations of animal cruelty and animal fighting. The training program is facilitated by the Humane Society of the United States.
“We will not tolerate any act of violence committed against a living creature in this county,” said Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess. “I’m grateful to the Humane Society of the United States, both for their continued dedication to the welfare of animals, and for passing along their expertise to our county’s law enforcement.”
This training seminar is designed to help law enforcement identify, investigate, and prosecute instances of animal cruelty and animal fighting. Topics to be covered include the following:
Background on animal fighting and illegal animal abuse in Maryland, including relevant laws
Link between animal abuse and other violent crimes
Investigating cruelty and fighting complaints, from first response to filing charges
How law enforcement and prosecutors can work together to enforce cruelty laws as a critical component to community safety
Recognizing key evidence, warrants, statements
The training will take place from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Henry L Hein Public Service Building located at 7480 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie, MD.
Participation is restricted to law enforcement personnel only. Members of the media are invited to speak with training instructors during the one-hour break beginning at 12:00 PM.
