On November 26, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Southern District desk officer took a call in reference to a fraud complaint. The victim stated she received a call from a suspect stating he was with the Anne Arundel County Police Department and the victim missed jury duty.

The suspect stated that the victim needed to pay a fine or she would be placed in jail. The victim became suspicious, and the suspect told her she could speak with another member of the Police Department. That individual told the victim she could speak to a judge tomorrow by phone to clear up the situation. The victim was advised to send money through her banking institution, and she ultimately sent an undisclosed amount of money to the suspects. Anyone with information on this incident or anyone who might have been a victim of a similar scam is asked to call Anne Arundel County Police Department's Southern District Detective Unit at 410-222-1965.

As a reminder, no government agency, legitimate business or court system will call and request immediate payment via gift card, wire/electronic transfer or cash.
