Annapolis, MD (December 23, 2024) The Department of Aging and Disabilities is pleased to announce the reopening of the Lula G. Scott Community Center located at 6243 Shady Side Road in Shady Side, MD. The center was closed due to a capital project to expand the parking lot to resolve a shortage of parking as well as improve ADA accessibility. During construction, the Department of Aging and Disabilities relocated the Senior Nutrition services it provided at Lula Scott to the St. Matthews United Episcopal Church, located across the street.
Built in 1926, the Lula G. Scott Community Center was originally known as the Shady Side School. This school was funded by the Julius Rosenwald fund. Mr. Rosenwald admired Booker T. Washington and used this fund to support the construction of schools for African-Americans in the rural South. The name was changed in 1956 to the Lula G. Scott School. In 1970, the Lula G. Scott School became the Lula G. Scott Community Center. From 1979 to 1987, the Lula G. Scott Community Center was leased by Anne Arundel County and operated as the South County Senior Activity Center. In 2003, the center housed Head Start and Early Head Start education programs while continuing to operate as a community center.
Today, Lula Scott hosts several agencies that provide services and resources to residents of all ages in need of support. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health’s Disease Prevention and Management provides services the first and third Wednesday of the month from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. That's everything from vaccines to testing and their Behavioral Health Division offers Peer Support and the Substance Use Disorder Assessments. The department will restart services and outreach at Lula Scott in January 2025. Information about additional services and clinic schedules can be found at www.aahealth.org or call 410-222-7095.
The Community Center operates as one of 22 Department of Aging and Disabilities nutrition sites throughout Anne Arundel County. The nutrition site operates under the Congregate Meal Program of the Senior Nutrition Program, providing a hot lunch and activities for participants Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The department’s Information and Assistance program offers onsite assistance with resource navigation for older adults, caregivers, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
