Annapolis, Maryland – An Odenton man plead guilty Friday to the murder of his neighbor, up-and-coming amateur boxer Isaiah Oludayo Olugbemi, last summer outside his townhome, State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced.
Nicholas Giroux, 36, entered guilty pleas to First-Degree Murder and Felony Use of a Firearm in a Violent Crime.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 22, 2025 in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court in Annapolis, where he faces Life in Prison plus 20 years.
"Mr. Olugbemi was a rising talent in boxing with a bright future ahead. Not only that, but he was the father of a young child," Leitess said. "The Defendant shot Mr. Olugbemi multiple times, at one point, returning to continue gunfire. This plea holds the Defendant accountable for this senseless crime and I hope that it brings some peace and justice to his family and friends."
On June 17, 2024, just before 10 p.m., Anne Arundel County police were called to the 500 block of Meadow Mist Way in Odenton for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers and paramedics discovered 27-year-old Isaiah Oludayo Olugbemi suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was airlifted to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was pronounced deceased. The Chief Medical Examiner determined the death was a homicide.
Investigation revealed that video surveillance captured footage of the crime. The video showed a man approach Mr. Olugbemi with a handgun outside a townhome. The man, later identified as Giroux, walked directly toward Mr. Olugbemi and shot him with a 9mm handgun multiple times. He continued to shoot until Mr. Olugbemi fell to the ground, then returned and fired three more shots before fleeing the scene.
A combination of witness information, video surveillance, and police records lead to Giroux as the suspect. When questioned, Giroux confessed to the murder and also led police to a bag across the street from the killing, which contained the handgun used in the crime.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Carolynn Grammas on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County, with the Honorable Richard R. Trunnell presiding.
