Earlier this week the County Executive signed Bill 6-25 (or Alfred’s law) and in 45 days it will become part of our code. Alfred was excited to be present for the bill signing and thanked the council for the unanimous support of my bill.
Bill 6-25 allows for miniature pigs to be kept as a pet on a residential lot. There are restrictions though, and current laws will apply, so a pet pig won’t be possible for everyone and anyone.

The bill has a limit of 2 miniature pet pigs (less than 22 inches tall at the shoulder). A pet pig can only be located on a lot of at least 47,500 sq feet (just over an acre), where the outdoor pet pig enclosure is at least 50 feet from a neighboring lot line and 100feet from a neighboring house. A pet pig is required to be spayed or neutered.

Classifying miniature pigs as pets, also means an owner is required to provide veterinary care under current law, which is no easy task considering there are few vets in our state who provide veterinary care for pigs. Alfred’s vet visits him from Delaware!
Pet pigs, like any pet kept outdoors, must not create a nuisance and should be provided regularly cleaned living area.
Alfred’s owners check all of these boxes. Yesterday was a good day for Alfred, and any future miniature pig owners prepared to take on the hefty responsibility (pun intended) of a miniature pet pig.
