On December 6, 2021, at approximately 08:15 a.m., officers responded to Interstate 97S in the area of MD 32 for a multi-vehicle crash involving an Anne Arundel County police vehicle.

A Chevrolet pick-up truck and an unmarked Anne Arundel County Police Interceptor Utility Vehicle were slowing or stopped in lane 1 of S/B I-97 due to traffic. A Volvo tractor-trailer approached both vehicles from behind. The Volvo failed to stop and struck the police vehicle from behind. The impact pushed the police vehicle into the pick-up truck. The officer sustained serious injuries as a result of this crash and was transported by Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter to an area trauma center. The driver of the Volvo Tractor was also transported to an area trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As of this release the officer is listed in stable condition and no one is currently in life-threatening condition.

A post-crash inspection of the Volvo was completed at the scene by certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors. The results of the inspection are pending. It is unknown at this time if the crash was due to a mechanical failure or driver error. Alcohol and/or drug usage is not believed to be a factor in this crash. The Anne Arundel County Police Department's Traffic Safety Section will be the primary investigating entity. Any witnesses to this crash are asked to call Traffic Safety 410-222-8082.
