Recovered Human Remains (Update) / Glen Burnie
On Monday, September 30, 2019 at approximately 11:13 a.m., officers from the Eastern District responded to a wooded area along Elvaton Road near Silent Breeze Court, Glen Burnie, Maryland for a report of a body being discovered. The body was discovered by a maintenance worker who was in the area. Upon arrival, Officers were directed to the human remains and the Homicide Unit responded to conduct an investigation.
Homicide detectives worked with the Evidence Collection Unit in processing the scene. The Anne Arundel County Recruit Class responded and assisted with a thorough search of the wooded area where items of evidentiary value were collected. A Forensic Investigator with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had the remains transported for an autopsy. The postmortem examination will be conducted on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 and will aid in determining the identity of the remains along with a cause and manner of death. Preliminary examination leads detectives to believe the remains may be that of a female and had been deceased in the area for several weeks.
On Tuesday, October 1, 2019 officers responded to the 400 block of Glen Mar Road for recovered partial human remains. Preliminarily it is believed to be part of the same remains recovered on September 30, 2019 mentioned above. Cause and manner of death has still not been determined, neither has the identity.
On Thursday, October 3, 2019 the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on the human remains recovered September 30 and October 1, 2019. Preliminarily the OCME is advising the recovered remains appear to be from the same body. Further DNA testing will assist in determining the relation of the remains.
Several tips have come in regarding the possible identity of the unknown remains. Homicide Detectives will be following up on the tips to try and positively identify the person. The OCME is advising the remains appear to be a 25-35 years of age female, approximately 5’01" and was missing several teeth. A light colored tank top was recovered from the person when the remains were discovered. The results of the autopsy are pending at this time as the investigation continues.
UPDATE (November 8, 2019):
During the course of the investigation several tips came in assisting law enforcement in a possible identity of the human remains. On Tuesday, November 5, 2019 the Anne Arundel County Latent Print Unit was able to positively identify the recovered human remains from Elvaton Road as Stacey Marie Deavers, a forty year old woman. In working with the Forensic Services Section they were also able to link, through DNA, the partial recovered remains from Glen Mar Road to that of Stacey Deavers.
Investigation revealed Stacey Deavers was reported missing on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 by her mother. It was learned Stacey Deavers was currently homeless and had not been seen or heard from since August 30, 2019. Family members reported they last saw her in the 1300 block of Oakwood Road where she appeared to be frail and sickly looking. Stacey Deavers was known to frequent the area of Crain Highway and 5th Avenue in Glen Burnie.
The cause and manner of death are still pending at this time as the investigation continues. This is a very fluid and active investigation. Child Pornography Arrest / Edgewater
On January 25, 2019, the Anne Arundel County Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation in reference to a report of a specific account that was directly associated in uploading child pornographic images to a particular internet site. The information was provided by the “National Center for Missing and Exploited Children” (NCMEC) which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to find missing children, reduce child sexual exploitation and prevent child victimization.
As the result of issuing and executing several court orders, detectives identified an address involved with uploading the child pornography. On June 3, 2019 detectives executed a search warrant at an address in the 4000 block of Kings Road in Edgewater Maryland. Numerous digital devices were seized as evidence in order that the electronic devices could be forensically analyzed. The suspect, identified as Robert Patrick Schmitt, a twenty seven year old male from the 4000 block of Kings Road, was on scene and interviewed in regards to the ongoing investigation. Child Abuse Detectives learned the suspect, Robert Schmitt, is currently registered in Maryland as a Tier One sex offender.
After receiving the results from the forensic extraction of the digital devices seized during the search warrant detectives recovered evidence of child pornography. Child Abuse detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Robert Schmitt charging him with two counts of distribution of child pornography and two counts of possession of child pornography. On November 8, 2019, Schmitt was located in the 4000 block of Kings Road, Edgewater, Maryland and placed under arrest without incident.
