Annapolis Port Marker

The City of Annapolis has been identified by the United Nations Science Cultural Organization and the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project as a “Site of Memory” during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

What is a Site of Memory? 

A Site of Memory is a monument, memorial, or marker erected to honor the two million captive Africans who perished during the transatlantic crossing known as the Middle Passage and the ten million who survived to build the Americas. 

There are 43 identified Sites (places where captured Africans stepped onto land after the Trans-Atlantic voyage) in North America. We honor the Ancestors and the enormity of our loss by raising the Port Marker.
