Bomb Threat/Explosion

Keep these safety tips in mind to protect yourself and others in the event of a bomb threat or explosion.

Dangers of Bombs and Explosions

A bomb is an explosive device that is designed to cause damage, injury, or death through an explosion. Bombs can vary in size and complexity, from small improvised devices to large military ordnance. They can be detonated using various mechanisms, including timers, remote controls, or by impact. Bombs are considered dangerous and are used in acts of terrorism, warfare, and sometimes in controlled demolitions for construction or mining purposes.

An explosion is a sudden and violent release of energy, typically accompanied by a loud noise, heat, and pressure. Explosions can result from various causes, such as the rapid combustion of a substance (like in a gas explosion), the detonation of an explosive material (like in a bomb), or the sudden release of pressure (like in a steam explosion). Explosions can cause damage to structures, injuries, and loss of life, depending on their size and intensity.

Explosion

Before an incident

To prevent explosions, it's important to follow safety guidelines and regulations specific to the potential sources of explosions. Some general measures include:

  • Proper storage and handling of flammable materials and explosives.
  • Regular maintenance and inspection of equipment and machinery to prevent malfunctions that could lead to explosions.
  • Implementing safety protocols for handling hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Providing training for employees on the safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Ensuring proper ventilation in areas where flammable gases or vapors are present.
  • Using appropriate protective equipment when working with hazardous materials.
  • Following the manufacturer's instructions for equipment and machinery to prevent overheating or other issues that could lead to explosions.
  • Implementing proper grounding and bonding procedures for static electricity control in flammable environments.
  • Keeping ignition sources away from flammable materials and areas.
  • Regularly inspecting and maintaining electrical systems to prevent electrical malfunctions that could cause explosions.
  • Pay attention to suspicious behaviors and remember if you see something, say something! Suspicious activity or behaviors may include:
    • Unusual packages
    • Abnormal cash transactions
    • Attempts to elicit confidential or classified information
    • Purchasing items that could be used to create an explosive, possibly in large quantities
    • Withdrawal from society, family, and friends
    • Social media posts promoting rants and threats
    • Tests of security measures
    • Impersonating a uniformed or military official

If you notice any suspicious activity that could pose a threat to public safety, make a detailed report to local law enforcement agencies. Call the Anne Arundel County Police Department Non-Emergency line at (410) 222-8610 to speak to a police officer. To report a crime, visit /police-department/crime-information/online-crime-reporting. If there is an immediate threat to life safety, call 911.

During an incident

If there is an explosion, it's important to prioritize your safety and the safety of others. Here are some general steps to follow:

  • Evacuate the area immediately and move to a safe location away from the site of the explosion to avoid further danger. If indoors, move to a room with minimal or no windows and seek cover under a sturdy piece of furniture.
  • Check yourself and others for injuries and call 9-1-1 to report the incident. Provide details about the location, nature of the explosion, and any injuries.
  • Do not enter any buildings affected by the explosion as they may be unstable and prone to collapse.
  • Be cautious of any flames, sparks, or sources of ignition, as there may be gas leaks or other hazards present.
  • Follow any instructions from emergency personnel and authorities. They will provide guidance on how to safely navigate the situation.
  • Stay tuned to local news or emergency alerts for updates and further instructions.
