Homicide/Suicide - Glen Burnie

On 04/05/2023 at approximately 10:00p.m., officers responded for an unknown disturbance in the 7300 block of Red Pond Court in Glen Burnie. As officers approached the residence they heard gunshots and multiple people began rushing out of the residence. As officers made their way into the residence they located two male subjects suffering from gunshot wounds. Homicide detectives were summoned to the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, a 27-year-old male, identified as Daniel Amponsah, requested that family members meet him at the residence. When Amponsah arrived at the address he became agitated and produced a handgun and began threatening his family members. The victim, identified as Amponsah's uncle, 47-year-old, Kofi Frempong, was shot by Amponsah as the remaining family members rushed out of the home. Before patrol officers were able to reach Amponsah, evidence at the scene indicated that he turned the firearm on himself. Officers located both Frempong and Amponsah and administered medical aid, however, both men were pronounced deceased at the scene. Based on the totality of the evidence and consistent statements of the witnesses involved, homicide detectives determined that the incident was a homicide/suicide.

On April 5, 2023, at approximately 11:00 p.m., officers responded for a report of a stolen credit card at the Sheraton, 1100 Old Elkridge Landing Road in Linthicum. Upon arrival, officers learned that two suspects checked into the hotel using a stolen credit card. Officers responded to the room and made contact with both suspects. During their investigation officers recovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun, approximately 260g of suspected marijuana, and $3,212 in cash. Officers would go on to learn that the male suspect was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Both suspects were arrested and charged accordingly.

Robbery (Attempt) - Glen Burnie

On April 5, 2023, at approximately 3:00 p.m. officers responded for a report of an attempted robbery that just occurred at the Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie. When officers arrived they learned that the juvenile victim was approached by two juvenile male suspects in the parking lot, who demanded property. Both suspects placed their hands over their waistbands causing the victim to believe they were armed with handguns. When the victim indicated that he didn’t have anything on him, he began walking towards the mall entrance followed by both suspects. As the victim neared the entrance he encountered his mother and both suspects fled. With the assistance of the mall security team, officers were able to locate both suspects and take them into custody without incident. During their investigation officers discovered that neither suspect was armed, nor did they obtain any property from the victim. Both suspects were arrested and charged accordingly.

On March 13th, 2023, CID Detectives began their investigation into the destruction of property at a Masonic Lodge located at 11 Crain Hwy South in Glen Burnie. Investigation revealed an unknown suspect smeared what appeared to be red paint on multiple doors of the Lodge. Detectives found hand-written letters containing concerning language posted to the entrance doors. During the investigation, detectives learned that the subject also damaged the windows on the entry doors and started a fire on the steps leading to the lodge. On March 21st, a member of the Annapolis Masonic Lodge had his home vandalized in the same or similar method/pattern as the lodge in Glen Burnie. As the investigation continued detectives learned this same suspect caused similar damage to the Annapolis Masonic Lodge located at 162 Conduit Street in Annapolis. On March 21st the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge located at 959 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Severna Park also reported vandalism with the same or similar method/pattern as the previous incidents. In an attempt to identify the suspect flyers were disseminated to local partners in the region.
 
UPDATE:
On March 22nd, officers from the Annapolis Police Department encountered the suspect in question in their jurisdiction. The suspect was positively identified as 43-year-old, Michael Paul Ozalas and was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the vandalism/destruction at each of the locations that were investigated.
 
At this time the investigation into these incidents is closed and there is no evidence to suggest that there are any threats to local area masonic lodges at this time.
