The County Executive’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Internship Program is designed to provide college students with an interest in Communications with the opportunity to develop and utilize their skills in the public sector. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is a growing field, and the need for communicating internally with employees and externally with residents is immense. The County’s two-pronged approach to EDI ensures compliance with anti-discrimination laws, while integrating diversity, access, and inclusion into County operations.

The County Executive’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion seeks a college-level Communications and Social Media Intern (EDI).

The Internship position requires dedicating up to 20 hours per week, with a small stipend provided.

The intern will work with the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office, and the County Executive’s Communications team, to develop a list of strategic communications partners, conduct research, write and edit copy, and engage in social media outreach.

This position includes a combination of in-person work at the Arundel Center in downtown Annapolis and remote work. Access to reliable internet and transportation is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to develop stories for Special Emphasis Observances (e.g., Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, etc.)
  • Develop contact list for diversity-related communications
  • Develop social media presence for the EDI office
  • Create graphics and other visual content for website and social media posts
  • Assist with planning and execution of Human Relations Commission events
  • Monitor social media sites for EDI issues

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a undergraduate or graduate program in communications, public relations, public administration, journalism or other related field
  • Strong written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to interact, work, and develop relationships with people of various backgrounds
  • Familiarity with diverse local, regional, and national affinity groups
  • Interest in local government
  • Ability to interact and build professional relationships virtually and in person
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Experience with photography or graphic design
