Special Operations Division Traffic Safety Section Police Motorcycle Operator & Instructor School

On June 13, 2022, the Anne Arundel County Police Departments Traffic Safety Section hosted a multi-agency Police Motorcycle Operator Instructor School. The class consisted of two students from the Baltimore Police Department, two students from the Howard County Police Department, and one student from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. This course prepared students to teach the 80-hour Police Motorcycle Operator Training course. They were required to demonstrate their ability to conduct high-caliber training which provided their agencies with reduced risk and improved safety. They were taught about adult education applications, setting up the various courses and basic practical operator exercises, which they too had to complete successfully. After 40-hours of their own training, they were required to teach the 80-hour Police Motorcycle Operator Training course to students with varying riding abilities.

On June 20, 2022, the 80-hour multi-agency Police Motorcycle Operator Training course began. The class consisted of one student from the Baltimore Police Department, one student from the Howard County Police Department and three students from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. This intensive two-week course is designed to improve officer safety and performance. While there is some classroom instruction, the majority of the course consists of hands-on experience in the saddle. This rigorous course consisted of both low and high speed maneuvers, cone courses, control courses, curve negotiation, defensive driving techniques and vehicle stops and tactical techniques to name a few.

Today, June 1, 2022, all five of the instructor candidates were granted their instructor certifications and will be certified motor instructors through the Maryland Police Training Commission. The five basic rider candidates also were granted their Police Motorcycle Operator certifications and will be certified to operate agency motorcycles within their respective departments.

We wish to congratulate these ten candidates who earned their motor or instructor wings!
