Statement from Anne Arundel County Chief of Police Amal E. Awad on the Indictment of an Anne Arundel County Police Officer:

Contact Information

“In August of 2024, the Anne Arundel County Police Department was notified of a criminal investigation being conducted by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID). The investigation was related to a fatal collision that occurred on August 10, 2024, in Laurel, Maryland, and an Anne Arundel County police officer’s role in the incident.

The officer was identified as Officer Alexander Rodriguez, a two-year veteran of the department. Officer Rodriguez’s police powers were suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

On April 2, 2025, we were made aware that Officer Rodriguez was indicted on two counts of manslaughter by vehicle, one count of duty of driver to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in bodily injury or death, and five counts of misconduct in office as the result of the criminal investigation being conducted by the Office of the Attorney General.

We have fully cooperated and have been working in concert with the Office of the Attorney General since the initial stages of this investigation. The alleged actions of Officer Rodriguez contained in this indictment are deeply disturbing and not representative of the men and women of the Anne Arundel County Police Department. Our department will continue to cooperate with the Office of the Attorney General’s investigation. As a result of today’s indictment containing two felony charges, the officer’s status has been changed from suspended with pay to suspended without pay.

Any media inquiries will be directed to the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.”
