Force Main Break Causes Sanitary Sewer Overflow in Severna Park

Annapolis, Maryland (August 12, 2024) – A force main break in the 800 block of Ritchie Highway caused a large sanitary sewer overflow yesterday in Severna Park. Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) officials report that 16,200 gallons of the overall overflow entered Cypress Creek before the spill was contained.

The overflow has been reported to the County Department of Health and the Maryland Department of the Environment. DPW crews posted signs to alert the community. The affected area was limed and vacuumed. Any necessary clean up activities will continue today.

The overflow was reported to DPW Emergency Services at 5 p.m. and the overflow was contained at 9:30 p.m. The cause of the break has not been determined.

County Health officials advise people coming in contact with the affected ground to immediately wash well with soap and warm water. Clothing should also be washed.
