Baltimore Man Receives Maximum Sentence for Felony First Degree Assault

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced today that Dareius Washington, 33, of Baltimore was sentenced to 25 years of active incarceration for one count of felony first degree assault.

The defendant entered a guilty plea on November 3, 2021

“This was truly a vicious attack. The defendant brutally assaulted the victim and then robbed him,” said State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess. “I hope that the victim is able to fully recover from these serious injuries and I am grateful that the defendant was held fully accountable and received the maximum sentence for his senseless crimes.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling prosecuted this case on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County.

On May 8, 2021, Anne Arundel County police officers responded to the 7000 block of Arundel Mills Circle in Hanover for a report of an injured man who was unconscious. Upon arrival, the victim was located and transported to University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the victim and defendant, later identified as Dareius Washington, were gambling at the nearby casino. Video surveillance showed the pair leaving the casino area together and walking toward the parking lot where they entered the victim’s vehicle. The victim entered the driver’s side of the car and the defendant got in the passenger side. Shortly thereafter, while in the victim's car, video surveillance showed the defendant striking the victim multiple times with his fists, causing the victim to lose consciousness. The defendant then pushed the victim out of the vehicle and onto the parking lot. The defendant exited the victim's car and went to the driver’s side of the car and began stomping on the victim's face and head. The defendant then went through the victim's pockets and stole his wallet. The defendant left the victim on the ground and began walking back to the establishment. Thirty seconds later, the defendant returned to the parking lot and stomped on the victim's head and face three more times. The victim sustained serious trauma to his skull and face and was transported to the nearby hospital. The defendant was subsequently located in the hotel lobby and arrested.

The Honorable Michael Wachs presided over the case.
