(Glen Burnie, MD) - As we continue to experience coastal flooding in Anne Arundel County, we urge residents to weigh the current conditions they are experiencing and what is anticipated over the next 10 to 12 hours. Our coastal communities and those in surrounding low-lying areas have already begun experiencing moderate to substantial coastal flooding which has affected road accessibility. Coastal flooding is expected to reach its peak at around midnight when we expect to see an additional 8 inches of coastal flooding.
With the knowledge that we have not seen the worst of it yet, now is the time to make the decision if it is safer for you and your family to leave your home. Making this decision now while there's still daylight is critical because conditions will continue to worsen and additional roads may become impassable. If you plan on leaving your home this evening to avoid the flooding, we urge you to take the following precautions:
- Never drive around barricades. Local responders use them to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.
- Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. Turn Around. Don’t Drown!
- Restrict children from playing in flooded areas.
If you plan on staying in your home this evening we urge you to take the following precautions:
- Follow any directives to turn off utilities. If you’re advised to switch off the main power source to your home by local or utility authorities, flip each breaker and THEN turn off the main breaker. You may also need to shut off the main valve for your home’s gas and water.
- DO NOT go near any downed power lines especially if there is standing water nearby.
- If your home experienced flooding, keep the power off until an electrician has inspected your system for safety.
- Check on your neighbors and loved ones. Provide assistance if you can to those who need help.
- If you experience a power outage please report it on BGE's website at bge.com/outages or call 877-778-2222.
