Anne Arundel County is known for its citizens' stewardship of their cultural resources. In 2020, Anne Arundel County's Cultural Resources Section began an initiative known as the Preservation Stewardship Program to leverage its passionate volunteer workforce to help protect and preserve our important historic landmarks, archaeological sites, and historic cemeteries. With respect to historic cemeteries, Anne Arundel County cannot protect a cemetery unless it knows that it exists and where it is. Once a cemetery is in the County's database, it has a much better chance of not being endangered by development.
Contact the County's Archaeological Sites Planner, Anastasia Poulos, if you know of a cemetery that needs to be recorded in the County database!
In order to assist with this effort, the Cultural Resources Section also has provided a DIGITAL SURVEY TOOL for the public that can be accessed via the following links, either as a downloadable form or an online web form. The Cultural Resources Section developed these tools in order to enable citizens to relay information and documentation for historic cemeteries throughout Anne Arundel County directly to us. There is an additional document below to provide guidance on how to fill out the form.
