Anne Arundel County owns and leases approximately 46,000 street lights along County roads. The annual energy and maintenance costs for these street lights exceed $5 million a year. The lights are designed to improve visibility for motorists and pedestrians. The installation and maintenance of street lights is done by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) based on work orders from the County.
Street lights are required to be installed by developers in new subdivisions. These lights are installed when the County determines that work has progressed to a point where new lights are unlikely to be damaged by construction equipment. The County also has three Capital Improvement Projects pertaining to Street Lighting.
H550700 LED Street Light Conversion
This project is to convert County-owned streetlights to LED (Light emitting diode) fixtures. All work is performed by BGE. LED fixtures require less maintenance and last longer. Existing mercury vapor streetlights present a hazardous waste issue and sodium vapor streetlights use significantly more energy than LED streetlights.
H563600 Pole Replacement
This project is to fund the replacement of old direct-burial steel poles and fiberglass poles past it’s lifespan of 20-25 years.
H542100 Security Street Lighting
This project is to fund the installation of new streetlights to improve safety and reduce crime at specific problem locations identified by the AACo Police Department. Due to fiscal constraints, new street lights are typically not added to existing roadways unless there is a documented traffic safety problem which would be improved by the installation of a new light.
