Enhanced Pedestrian & Bike Crossings

The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) has installed Crosswalk Beacons at select crossings throughout the County. Pedestrians and drivers alike benefit from this technology.

DPW will install enhanced school crossing warning signs that will be illuminated with LED lights around the sign edges. The LED lights will be activated by a pushbutton and remain activated for a period of time. The photograph above shows an example of the warning signs.

After the button located near the crosswalk is pressed, LED lights surrounding the sign will flash for a predetermined time to help warn motorists that pedestrians may be crossing at the crosswalk. Pedestrians must wait for an adequate gap in traffic before proceeding to cross.

By law, vehicles traveling the roadway are NOT required to stop for the LED illuminated signs. Pedestrians must wait for an adequate gap in traffic before proceeding to cross the road.

The DPW continues to study areas of concern such as near High Schools, to develop traffic plans that improve overall traffic operation and safety. We will work with community leaders and the police to determine what additional modifications are needed in each community.

Should you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact DPW Traffic Engineering Division at 410-222-7331. We look forward to hearing from you.
