Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC) works to meet the educational needs of adults in Anne Arundel County in literacy, math, high school diploma preparation, and the English language. With a team of dedicated volunteers and passionate participants, AACLC is committed to helping adults achieve their educational goals.
In 1977, six Laubach tutors founded the AACLC to help local adults with literacy. Since then, AACLC has expanded to also provide math, English language, and high school diploma preparation programs. The organization's volunteers donate thousands of hours annually to personalized tutoring and currently boast over 100 student-tutor pairs working to improve their skills. Students create goals related to their literacy skills, such as meeting employment requirements, attaining their GED, and helping their children achieve their learning goals.
AACLC also provides assessments, tutoring services, and books and materials at no cost to individuals seeking assistance. Depending on the student’s availability, students will meet with their tutor one-on-one for at least one hour a week.
