Annapolis, MD (August 16, 2019) - The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is pleased to announce free workshops provided by the Living Well Program. This is an evidence-based chronic disease self-management program that provides adults 18 and older who have long-lasting health problems with ideas to help them take charge of their health and live active and enjoyable lives.
Workshops to be offered:
- Living Well with Hypertension - will be held at Bay Ridge Apartments located at 1 Bens Drive, Annapolis, on Wednesday, September 4 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. This workshop is available for people who have been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and want to learn how to better manage their condition.
- Living Well with Diabetes - a workshop designed for people with prediabetes, Type 1 and 2 diabetes and/or their caregivers to help manage diabetes. This is scheduled at Bay Ridge Apartments, 1 Bens Drive, Annapolis, on September 11 and 25, October 3, 9, 16, 23, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. This is a 6-week workshop that will meet once a week and teach participants how to manage blood sugar levels, count carbohydrates, read nutrition labels, and communicate with their health care providers, family members, and friends.
- Stepping On - is a 7-week falls prevention workshop that will be held at Park View @ Severna Park Apartments starting Thursday, September 5 through Thursday, October 17 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. This workshop is designed to help lower the risk of falling in older adults. Falling can result in serious injury and is one of the leading causes of hospital admissions. It will teach participants to recognize their risk of falling and help build the physical strength, self-confidence, and practical skills needed to avoid falling. The workshop will be led by health professionals and include local guest speakers including a physical therapist, pharmacist, vision expert, and a community safety officer.
- The program focuses on a variety of topics including strength and balance exercises, helps to identify and remove fall hazards from your home and community, how medications can increase your risk of falling, and how vision and hearing affect your risk of falling. Participants will learn the material in a fun, hands-on way, putting the information to use from the very first session. Comfortable clothes and appropriate shoes are recommended.
All workshops are presented at no cost to the public by the Living Well Program of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, but registration is required.
