Anne Arundel County Police Department Reserve Officers perform a wide range of activities to support sworn police officers. This includes duties like directing traffic and ensuring pedestrian safety at events such as USNA Blue Angels and at approximately 130 other community events annually, responding to accident scenes to help manage traffic, responding to emergency call-outs for weather and other emergencies, conducting patrols, identifying abandoned vehicles, investigating roadway hazards, performing courier duties, supplementing the school crossing guard program, issuing parking tickets for handicapped and fire lane parking violations and many other non-emergency activities.
The reserve officer performs services to support both the police officer on the street and the citizens of Anne Arundel County. Reserve officers take great pride in helping keep our communities safe. Selected candidates receive free uniforms, professional training and equipment and use of department reserve vehicles to fulfill their official duties.
The reserve officer position is a rewarding volunteer opportunity requiring a commitment of at least 16 hours of service each month; including two special events. Over its 42 year history, the AACoPD Reserve Officer program has proven to be an effective method designed to increase the efficiency of the sworn patrol officer by keeping officers available to answer calls for service that require law enforcement authority.
The reserve officer is not compensated monetarily, is not authorized to carry weapons and has no vested arrest authority. A thorough background check will be completed before acceptance into the reserve program.

The successful applicant must be age 21 or older, a citizen of the United States, have no record of serious misdemeanors or felony convictions, and be willing to perform a minimum of 16 hours of police work including two special events each month.
